5 Must See Romantic Comedies for Journalists
In the middle of a global pandemic you can quickly find yourself straying away from simple tasks and responsibilities to binge watching television shows and movies. If you are anything like me, your deadline for your story got pushed back or the majority of your stories have fallen through meaning you have time for a quick movie. So to all romantic comedy lovers, especially my journalism friends, here are five must see rom coms about journalists that will distract you from responsibilities for a bit.
Never Been Kissed, directed by Raja Gosnell
Never Been Kissed is the kind of movie that you can quote all day long, seriously the words “grossy Josie” come up randomly in my house all the time. This movie stars 1999 Drew Barrymore where she plays the role of a journalist named Josie. Josie wants to move away from her usual copyediting and into deep reporting. Thus landing Josie the opportunity to pose as a highschooler and go back to school and research contemporary teenage culture. As you can imagine an attractive English teacher, played by Michael Vartan, appears and I’ll let you discover the rest of Josie’s story, here is the trailer.
2. Longshot, directed by Jonathan Levine
A more recent film but probably the funniest out of these five must sees, Longshot (2019) features two household names, Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron, as old acquaintances who meet again. Rogen’s character, Fred, is a free spirited and ambitious journalist not afraid to stir a little commotion. Fred stumbles upon influential politician Charlotte on her road to presidency and soon realizes she was once her babysitter. On a whim, Charlotte hires Fred as her speech writer for her campaign and their story turns into a sweet but very comical movie for us to enjoy, here is the trailer.
3. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, directed by Donald Petrie
This is a film that I went so long without seeing and as soon as I watched it all I wanted was more. If you consider yourself a rom com fan and haven’t had the chance to see this movie, stop reading this, go watch and come back! How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, talk about dreamy, and is based off a short cartoon by the same name. Hudson’s character, Andie, is an advice columnist in New York City and pushes the boundaries for her news piece, AKA the name of this movie. Enter McConaughey’s character, Ben, who is so sure of his charm he is sure he can get a woman to fall in love with him in 10 days. You think you can guess what happens but probably not, you just have to watch and find out, here is the trailer.
4. The Devil Wears Prada, directed by David Frankel
Who doesn’t love the infamous Meryl Streep, and to have Anne Hathaway right there with her, talk about a movie. Hathaway’s character, Andy, is a recent college graduate who lands a job at a prestigious Runway magazine as Miranda’s, Streep's character, assistant. Andy soon learns how this dream place and this great job is a lot more difficult to handle than first anticipated. Through this movie Hathaway’s character learns to juggle having a serious relationship, adjusting to her new job and finding herself. Not only does the story of the aspiring journalist entertain us but the amazing outfits are actually to die for, here is the trailer.
5. The Holiday, directed by Nancy Meyers
I don't think a single Christmas goes by without my mom and I watching this movie. As if having Jack Black and Jude Law in the movie as the main men wasn't enough we were gifted with Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz as the leading ladies, talk about stellar. In this movie, Winslet’s character, Iris, has just been dumped and can't stand the thought of working in the same newsroom as her ex. Coincidentally, Diaz’s character, Amanda, is unlucky with love and needs a getaway. The pair swap homes through a housing website for the holidays. Amanda navigates life in a cozy English village while Iris navigates the luxury life, and home, of a Hollywood movie trailer producer each meeting alive interest along the way. This holiday flick is sure to bring you all the feels, here is the trailer.
