How to incorporate your favorite TV shows into your everyday style
Stop the Instagram liking, the TikTok scrolling and the Pinterest pinning. These apps are no longer the go-to place to look when it comes to finding new outfit inspiration. With so much free time on your hands due to the pandemic, many have forgotten where most outfit inspiration came from in the first place. The one and only, big screen.
But the time has come to stop the scroll and re-binge your favorite shows for fashion inspiration. Here are five television shows and how you can incorporate their looks into your style.
Bridgerton
You may be wondering if it’s even possible to incorporate fashion from a period drama, specifically one set in 19th century Britain, into your everyday rotation of clothes. The answer is yes. With shows like “Bridgerton,” it's easy to incorporate corset tops and corset belts into your wardrobe. Take it a step further and spice things up with fun patterns, puffed sleeves and accessories, think chunky gold and silver jewelry. Claire Zeman, a third-year business major, began incorporating things like this into her closet after a binging “Bridgerton” and a plethora of TikToks about the show.
“The mix of cottage core and royalty core was all over my TikTok for a while,” Zeman said. “Fashion influencers and industry professionals were showing how to achieve this vibe and look so I had to try it out.”
The Queen’s Gambit
Another Netflix original that quickly went from pure entertainment to fashion genius. Though this show in particular isn’t causing a whole trend on TikTok, many patterns and staple pieces from this time period have become a staple of 2021 fashion. “The Queen’s Gambit” is set in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and could be coming back.
Some simple elements from “The Queen’s Gambit” that you can incorporate are patterned pants, hats, skirts and simple, yet sophisticated turtle necks and cardigans. Popular patterns that fit with this show are gingham and tweed. Throw it all together and don't be afraid to pair it with a peacoat or long blazer as a finishing touch. Beth would be proud.
Friends
As if throwing it back to 19th century Britain and the ‘50s and ‘60s wasn’t enough, you can’t forget about the ‘90s and early 2000s. These were times where fashion was widely celebrated on screen, rather than just seen as a minor part of the program. As Dr. Suzanne Marshall, fashion merchandising and design associate professor at California State University, Long Beach puts it,
“If you remember ‘Sex and the City,’ four female leads each having a different style every week they were showing a bunch of cool things,” Marshall said. “It was almost like having a live fashion blogger.”
Years later, we are still seeing the resurgence of trends from this time period. Along with the classics like “Clueless” and “Sex and the City,” is where “Friends” belongs. But,the great thing about “Friends” is how easy it is to dress like a character from the show. No fancy items necessary! When it comes to inspiration, basics and neutrals are key. Of course, layering plays a big part in achieving the look too. But, that is all it takes. Watch your favorite characters on the show and observe how they mix their plain black dress or their flannel with a myriad of different things. You can’t go wrong.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Despite this show not being a period piece or something that thrives off wardrobe, much of the show's theme and overall tone can be inspiring for people who are trying to channel a dark academia aesthetic. Shows like “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” feature characters relatively close to the average age of college students, not wearing sweats. This can inspire us to add a new touch to some of your favorite outfits. Dr. Marshall says that many outfits from age targeted programs have been placed in stores.
“The programs aimed at that target group [teen and college], you see a lot of that in stores now,” Marshal said. “And of course streetwear, any time there is a new tennis shoe worn on a show everyone jumps on it.”
Though this show majorly lacks in street wear style. It is definitely targeting that same demographic and it's working because this style is definitely in. So, when channeling your inner witch and all of their great outfit choices you have to think fall. Dark autumn colors, turtle necks, sweaters, dresses paired with tights, anything that screams ‘Halloween is around the corner’ would be perfect for this type of look.
Euphoria
Though much of the topics discussed in “Euphoria” are extremely serious, the aesthetic of the show, as a whole, is far less serious.not and that is primarily because of the wardrobe and makeup. Throughout the show, there is a common theme with bright colored makeup and the beauty of those looks is the ability to dress it up or down. Some characters express themselves through the brightest of colors, while others don’t mind keeping it basic. Nonetheless, the best scenes showcase signature “Euphoria” makeup looks.Crystal Kem, a fourth-year public relations major, was extremely inspired to try new things after watching Euphoria.
“It was hard not to feel inspired to recreate the makeup looks in ‘Euphoria’ because they were all new trends that have never been seen before,” said Kem.
But, even if you are not a makeup guru, you can still succeed in incorporating “Euphoria” into your everyday look. Aim for bright clothes to add a flashy pop and don't be afraid to be different! Minimal makeup with a dusting of glitter and gems can be seen in this show. As well as full, colorful faces. These looks can easily be found in the show, and now in your everyday outfits.
The true beauty of fashion is staying true to yourself and pushing the envelope. Don't be afraid to find what you love and gain inspiration from it in every way imaginable!
